As Erin’s daughter turned one, she realized that the impressions she was making would be lasting. A strong desire to set good eating habits young helped drive Erin to log onto Weight Watchers Online.
I remember what it was like when I was heavy. I spent my days lying to myself about how I didn’t eat sweets or snack. I had myself convinced that I just had a “slow metabolism.” I descend from a family of big eaters, who always clean their plates. I didn’t know what full felt like, and ate as much as my husband at a sitting.
Friendly competition
At my workplace several co-workers decided to kick off a weight-loss challenge. I decided to give it a try. Two months into trying to lose I’d gained five pounds! I decided I needed help so I subscribed to Weight Watchers Online and started following the POINTS® Weight-Loss System. In a matter of days I had come to realize just how much I was overeating.
My goal was to take it one day at a time. Everyone in my life kept telling me that I didn’t need to lose weight. It was frustrating. I had to remain strong and asked them to allow me to try to make the changes that would bring me and my family greater health. Medically I was classified as obese and I couldn’t lie to myself about that.
Choosing online
I loved following the plan online. It fit my lifestyle perfectly. My daughter is my life and I didn’t want to take the time away from my family to attend meetings. I embraced every tool and article provided to me online. I read them and learned how to respect my body and treat food as fuel. The Community helped me know that I was not alone in my struggles.
As my habits changed I realized that my family was watching. My young daughter had just turned one and was really absorbing the way I ate, as she formed eating habits of her own. Suddenly I noticed that she wanted to eat what I was eating: fruit, vegetables and grilled chicken instead of fried. I knew that I was doing my best as a mom. It was all worthwhile.
I continue to be grateful for the healthy eating structure that Weight Watchers has given me. I got pregnant not long after reaching my weight goal with Weight Watchers and gained 10 pounds in the first trimester. Having the plan to fall back on when I miscarried was the structure I needed to stunt the gain and maintain. Without the plan, who knows how big I would have gotten and how that might have fueled my depression.
I am grateful to have the ability to respect myself when it comes to food and food choices. I love being thin. It has enhanced the quality of my life in so many ways. Today when people try to tempt me I always tell them that, “I love pizza, but not pizza thighs!”
| Erin’s tips |
- Do it for yourself and remember that when you lie, you are only lying to yourself.
- Food is like a budget. You wouldn’t go into a store and say “I want those shoes” and take them home without knowing how much they cost or assessing if they’re worth it.
- Everyone said I would gain the weight back. I knew I didn’t want to and that’s why I chose Weight Watchers. So many people I’ve met told me they used to be heavy and had done Weight Watchers years ago and still look great!
- Tomorrow is a new day…let go of today if you didn’t do your best. You can start over now.
- Log your weight every week, even on maintenance. I have a number that, should I go over it, I am back to tracking every day to fall back below it.
